Xia’s arms felt empty as Nurse Lydia wheeled her back, leaving Ella behind. They promised she would be brought down to her in just a few short hours, but now that Xia had spent time with her, those hours would feel excruciatingly long.

“By the way, you have a visitor waiting for you.”

“I do?” A prickle of uncertainty creeped up the back of her neck. Surely Mason didn’t think to come and see how she was; she didn’t think he had it in him, and with what Nurse Lydia told her during their walk back down, the police were looking for him.

Had her mother found her, or worse, her father and brother? She didn’t think any of them were her visitors either because unless they had been watching her at that specific time, there was no way they could have known. As they continued the rest of the way down the hallway, she kept wondering who was waiting to see her, feeling apprehensive.

“Yep,” Lydia replied, not catching on to the anxiety that had overcome her patient. “The older woman, your neighbor I’ve been told, who called the paramedics. She’s been worried sick, calling every chance she’s had and asking how you and the baby have been doing.”

They entered the hospital room and Xia shimmied herself onto the bed.

“If you’d prefer, though, that she visit another time, I don’t mind telling her you fell asleep as soon as we got back from seeing Ella.”

Xia smiled gratefully but shook her head. “Thank you, but that’s okay. Carolyn saved mine and Ella’s lives. Seeing her would be really great, actually.”

“You got it, sweets. I’ll go and grab her now.”
